Vixen of the Month - August 2017

Lady Kori:  What work do you do?

Olive: I work as a radiation therapist at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.

LK: How did you first discover pole dancing?

Olive: I went to New York for a bachelorette party and tried pole dancing for the first time there.

LK: Do you have any previous dance, fitness or sports experience?

Olive: I have no dance experience, and have never been into any fitness routine or been sporty at all. I actually hated exercising and would dread doing anything to exert energy.

LK: What made you feel pole dancing could be for you and decide to try it?

Olive: I wanted to try something that was completely new and different. I was basically a couch potato and thought I was getting really out of shape and unhealthy, but I had no motivation to go to a gym or join any sports. And I thought pole dancing could be fun and unique.

LK: How did you come to be a member at Brass Vixens?

Olive: I found a Groupon for Brass Vixens and started going to the Yonge studio.

LK: What were your first impressions?

Olive: I thought there were a lot of class selections, and variety. And then I met Kori, and felt so welcomed and cared for.

LK: What keeps you committed to pole dancing?

Olive: Knowing that there are so many elements in pole dancing to improve upon keeps me committed to pole dancing. There's the conditioning, the flexibility, and the self expression that's allowed through dance.  There is always something to work on and get better and that gives me the drive to keep practicing!

LK: What do you feel is a crucial element for a successful class experience?

Olive: Safety first.  Having an instructor that is attentive to everyone's strengths and weaknesses. And breaking down all the moves especially in higher level classes where I'm learning things for the first time. And having the specific points of contact demonstrated or modifications for difficult moves.  That gives me the confidence to be able to try things safely.

LK: What has been an exciting moment for you on your pole journey?

Olive: Being able to express myself through dancing, and being able to work on choreography that's new and exciting every month.

LK: Do you have any pole goals?

Olive: the ever elusive Ayesha!

LK: How has pole dancing and taking classes at Brass Vixens effected the rest of your life and sense of self?

Olive: Pole dancing has almost become secondary to the friends that I've made through being at Brass Vixens. Having surrounded myself with people of similar interest who support me has increased my confidence and happiness. It sounds cheesy but am so glad to have found pole sisters!

LK: What has surprised you the most?

Olive: That I can actually dance! Having no experience in dance and no flexibility, I am surprised that I can learn how to coordinate my body!

LK: What are you favourite classes and why?

Olive: Choreo/Korio and Afrodisia! These classes are always so challenging and cardio intense. The creativity and flow always has me developing my strength and stamina.

LK: What are your top 3 reasons to attend classes at Brass Vixens?

Olive: My instructors <3, my pole sisters and to keep dancing!

Thank you Olive for being a dedicated Vixen!!

March 2017 - Vixen of the Month

Lady Kori: Hello Sarah! What work do you do?

Sarah: I'm a freelance visual merchandiser, creating and installing retail window displays. I've spent a lot of time on a ladder with a paint brush or drill, so I've never been too afraid of climbing a pole ;)

LK: How did you first discover pole dancing?

Sarah: I saw it on Groupon and knew absolutely nothing about it or anybody that did it. It sounded fun but it also scared me a little... so I had to try it!

LK: Do you have any previous dance, fitness or sports experience?

Sarah: I quit ALL the sports my mom made me sign up for as a kid, but I do have 8 years of ballet under my belt!

LK: What made you feel pole dancing could be for you and decide to try it?

Sarah: I wanted a fun way to keep fit after I lost a little bit of weight for my wedding a few months before. It quickly became so much more than that. It definitely keeps me in shape but I don't think about my weight anymore, just about what tricks I'm trying to learn!

LK: How did you come to be a member at Brass Vixens?

Sarah: Groupon! I couldn't convince any of my friends to do it too... so I finally went alone to my first class feeling pretty nervous. The teacher was so positive and fun and totally inspiring. I was hooked! My first class was on Valentine's day and it's the best thing I've done for myself... love yourself!

LK: What were your first impressions?

Sarah: I was totally convinced I would never be able to do a basic fireman spin. Also, I WANT THE SHOES.

LK: What keeps you committed to Brass Vixens and pole dancing?

Sarah: The Vixen community! Everyone is so inspiring and encouraging. When I ask my friends to come to the showcases I tell them "it's basically a bunch of awesome people cheering on a bunch of other awesome people doing really awesome things". It's also very therapeutic. I can't even imagine a life without BV classes... for real though.

LK: What do you feel is a crucial element for a successful class experience?

Sarah: Listen to your body and be nice to it! While I hate taking a few days off pole I sometimes come back feeling stronger. Also, have a sense of humor. Trying to get new moves or tricks for the first time is usually not pretty, laugh at yourself.

LK: What has been an exciting moment for you on your pole journey?

Sarah: Having the showcases and the chance to perform in front of people is awesome, with a troupe or a solo, you learn so much about yourself.

LK: Do you have any pole goals?

Sarah: To shoulder mount like a weightless ninja and to also deadlift into a handstand. And to be more comfortable on spin pole. and to learn more Lyra. It never ends!

LK: How has pole dancing and taking classes at Brass Vixens effected the rest of your life and sense of self?

Sarah: It's given me so much more confidence in myself and my body, and loads of patience, for myself and for others. I can also do way more sit-ups and push-ups than my husband but I usually try not to rub that in his face.

LK: What has surprised you the most?

Sarah: When a teacher demonstrates a new trick or move and my brain is like "no way, never" and then I try it and it's not so bad. Believe in yourself first, then work hard!

LK: What are you favourite classes and why?

Sarah: Floorplay! It feels great to step away from the pole and have nothing but movement. I also love Pole Choreo because it's the perfect blend of strength and sexy.

LK: What are your top 3 reasons to attend classes at Brass Vixens?

Sarah:
1. It's a fun way to stay fit and brag to your friends that you're the strongest (unless those friends are also Vixens!)
2. the Vixen community!!!!
3. an excuse to buy new 8" shoes.

LK: Heels or no heels?!

Sarah: HEELS! A room of strong sexy dancers heel-clacking in unison is the best sound!

Thank you Sarah!

None of us had any experience but we all had a hilariously awkward and good time trying it for the first time! LK: Do you have any previous dance, fitness or sports experience? Carly: I've dabbled in a number of dance styles and sports over the years, such as Chinese cultural dancing, contemporary, samba, ballet, hip hop, muay thai, gymnastics, yoga, aerial silks, dodgeball, skiing, surfing, and recently I've gotten into lyra, acroyoga and contortion. Vixen of the Month Elizabeth Cruickshank aka Candy Floss

Vanessa: What do you do besides pole dancing (profession, hobbies, interests etc.)?

Candy: I’m a Registered Dental Hygienist. So make sure to floss Vixens! Having good oral is important! Oral hygiene that is ;) My other passion is Brazilian Jui Jitsui because you get to choke people (when isn't that fun?)

Vanessa: When did you first discover or hear about pole dancing?

Candy: I first discovered pole several years ago working in Oakville, a client owned a studio. But I never had the opportunity to go there. Early this year I kept seeing Groupon deals for Brass Vixens and then I met Michymi. (Love her!). She cracked some jokes which totally made the whole experience less intimidating and also got me coming back.

Vanessa: Do you have any previous dance or fitness background?

Candy: In these Confessions of a Wall Flower, I must admit, I had no previous experience.

Vanessa: What surprised you most about pole dancing?

Candy: I was surprised how much strength it takes.

Vanessa: What keeps you continuing to pole dance and attend classes at Brass Vixens?

Candy: The welcoming and judgement free environment is a beautiful thing. I love my instructors and friends and I enjoy working on old and new goals. Oh Merciful Zues! I will be bendy one day!

Vanessa: Do you have any pole/aerial goals?

Candy: Yas! I want to do a Lyra solo and a burlesque performance with Brass Vixens and eventually at other venues and events.

Vanessa: Do you have a favourite class and why?

Candy: Lyra, Heartthrob, and Erotic Pole are my favourites because in each of these classes I get strong, I get creative and I get to let Candy Floss out to play!

Vanessa: How has attending classes at Brass Vixens affected the rest of your life and sense of self?

Candy: I feel the classes have boosted my confidence, helped with my posture, and is helping to give me an outlet for my creative side.

Vanessa: How do your friends and family feel about your pole dance passion?

Candy: Mixed feelings throughout but everyone is happy that I am doing something I enjoy.

Vanessa: Heels or no heels?

Candy: Heels. How is that even a question? LOL

Vanessa: How would you feel about having a dance move named after you?

Candy: That would be fantabulous!  It would definitely need to be somewhat comical.

Vanessa: What are your top 3 reasons to recommend pole dancing and Brass Vixens?

Candy: 1) Great Atmosphere 2) Great Instructors and 3) Great Fun!  Come and play!!!

416 August Feature Vixen

Feature Vixen for August is Lubna

Hello Lubna!

Lady Kori: What work do you do?
Lubna: I am a special educator/teacher. I work with kids with special needs.

LK: How did you first discover pole dancing?
Lubna: I was still in Dubai when my friend suggested I try pole dancing.

LK: What made you feel it could be for you and decide to try it?
Lubna: Anything that has to do with dancing is for me... Or at least that's how I feel seeing as I love to dance!! I tried it the moment I got the chance.

LK: Do you have any previous dance or fitness background?
Lubna: Not really aside from belly dancing while growing up. I just love to dance and workout, to keep moving. I always like to try new styles of dance.

LK: What was your first pole dancing experience?

Lubna: I was in Dubai when I took the first pole dance class and as much as I loved it, it was so hard because I did not have the muscle strength for it at all. That class was pretty intense! I continued for a couple of classes afterwards but then stopped because I was moving to Canada.

Lubna at 20 weeks pregnant!

LK: How did you come to be a student at Brass Vixens?
Lubna: As soon as I was settled in after my move here I started looking for dance classes. It is a must for me to keep dancing and moving! I found the Brass Vixens Yonge Street studio close to where I am living. I thought I needed more muscles and strength before trying pole dancing again so I worked out for around 3 months at the gym and then enrolled at the studio!! Joining Brass Vixens was one of the best decisions I ever made!!

LK: What were your first impressions?
Lubna: I was honestly very happy! The classes were not as hard as I was expecting them to be from my previous experience and I loved the instructors and their style of teaching right away.

LK: What keeps you committed to Brass Vixens and pole dancing?
Lubna: The fun, the strength, the stress release, the fact that I am dancing and of course the new bruises (they make me feel like I'm progressing!!)

LK: Do you have a favourite class?
Lubna: That is a hard one as I love them all!! I've always been a person who likes to focus on proper technique so I do like hard work when it comes to classes. I love the Choreo and Flexy classes!

LK: What has been an exciting moment for you on your pole journey?
Lubna: Every step forward has been very exciting. Moving from one level to another and seeing my progress in dancing and strength. However, I must say the best moment so far is the fact that I was still able to invert while 20 weeks pregnant... but not anymore!

LK: Do you have any pole goals?
Lubna: Oooh, a lot of them now that I have taken things slower with the baby on board! My goal right now is to keep dancing as long and as much as I can. After I deliver, I look forward to getting to where I was before I got pregnant and moving forward from there.

LK: How has pole dancing and taking classes at Brass Vixens effected the rest of your life and sense of self?
Lubna: I used to be a shy person when it came to first meetings or gatherings but I guess my experience of Canada and taking classes at Brass Vixens changed that in me. It is a boost of energy and confidence! Along with taking my daily vitamins I go to pole classes and I am set for the rest of the day!!

LK: What has surprised you the most?
Lubna: My strength! I used to be so skinny and weak before I started working out at Brass Vixens. Now, even with the baby on board I feel like I am stronger than I have ever been. That and the fact I can actually walk in 8 inch heels!!

LK: What are your top 3 reasons to attend classes at Brass Vixens?
Lubna: I love the instructors! That is one of the main reasons I continue. They focus on technique and they give you individualized attention especially when it comes to form, which I find impressive and very important when dancing. I love the fact that each instructor has her/his own style so I can learn a lot from all of them. The atmosphere is very friendly and encouraging. There are so many different classes to try and new ones being added!! Last but not least, it so addictive that you don't feel like you want to stop! I've had days where I would take up to 3 or 4 classes and wonder how I could fit in a 5th!
Thank you Brass Vixens for this wonderful opportunity and life experience!
Lubna

Thank you Lubna for being a Vixen!!
